Martial Arts: Responsibility

Responsibility: Doing what you say you’re going to do. Refusing to make excuses if things don’t go right. Knowing what to do and doing it to the best of your ability.

From the beginning in martial arts training, responsibility is a key feature. Students are responsible for learning and remembering not only primary techniques of their chosen martial arts form, but also the ceremonial aspects of martial arts.

Students will be pushed to perform better than they think they can. Many times, this will lead you to tell yourself, “I can’t do this! I can’t keep on going. It’s just too much!”

But this is where your sense of responsibility kicks in. You made the commitment to participate in the martial art form of your choice. With that commitment comes the responsibility to stay with it, no matter the cost.

Martial arts teaches you that.

Doing what you need to do in order to advance through the stages of earning your belts is a strong component of responsibility that studying the martial arts teaches you. Becoming someone who can be relied on, depended on to do what you say is another aspect of responsibility that comes with studying martial arts.

Learning self-control through sparring and being tested leads to responsibility, also. You’ll learn to use good judgment in every aspect of your life, thinking through your actions before actually doing them shows responsibility.

You’ll learn to think about the well being of others as well as yourself in all of your relationships. And, regardless of problems you may encounter, you’ll learn to keep going until whatever job you have is completed. These qualities come from learning martial arts.

In martial arts, you’ll learn to take ownership of your choices and your actions. You learn to decide what is right and what is wrong, and to choose right.

All of these qualities are involved in being responsible. The great thing about all these qualities of responsibility you learn in martial arts is that they also become part of every aspect of your life.
