Meditation and Kung Fu

Kung-fu is a way to increase your self-defense skills, your physical well-being, and a way to bring balance to your mind, body, and spirit. Meditation and kung-fu go hand-in-hand in this latter goal.

Meditation is a way to remove yourself from the tendency many students of kung-fu have to try to think your way into using techniques for self-defense or for winning sparring matches. By staying in your head, you tend to undermine yourself and get tied up in doubts, fears, and uncertainties.

Meditation and kung-fu help you achieve the ability to stay centered. To draw power that you can then use in the application of techniques you learn. Staying centered helps you draw energy from the stored force you build up through practice.

When you’re feeling pressure, think you’re threatened, or find yourself intimidated, you’re likely to go into your head instead of staying centered. This leads to the fear and hesitation that leads you to lose a match or possibly even get injured. Through the use of meditation and kung-fu techniques, you’ll stay centered where you can stay more alert and aware.

Staying centered allows your life force, or qi, to flow evenly and allows you to focus on the moment and handle situations more appropriately. It allows you to act more spontaneously as you were trained.

In oriental medicine, the belief is the energy of the body follows the energy of the mind. When the mind is relaxed and focused intensely, its energy is more available to the body. Your movements become more fluid, your body becomes stronger, your reactions become more flexible. You become ready to handle whatever is in front of you.

Meditation and kung-fu brings balance to the energies flowing in you, allowing you to channel them more appropriately. You are not only more physically balance, but also more emotionally balanced. This can bring on better reactions to current situations, avoidance of conflict, being able to stand your ground, and stating your opinion while allowing others to have theirs without antagonism.

Meditation also brings on peace. It makes your mind and body an inner sanctuary for those times you feel stressed. A place you can return to at will and feel safe.

Research has shown the area of the brain made more active in people who have strong willpower is the same area very active during meditation. Thus, practicing meditation can lead to more willpower, also.

Shifu Raymond Ahles at Blue Dragon School of Martial Arts is ready and able to help you in practicing the basics of kung fu and in learning the skills that will help you in your training for life. Contact him at 201-385-3130 today and get started or started again!
