Most of us can think of someone in positions of power or fame who makes a great mistake and then blamed someone else for it. Taking responsibility seems to be quickly disappearing as a valued human quality.

But you must keep in mind making mistakes and taking responsibility are important factors in making you a valuable human being. Only by recognizing and accepting your mistakes, and then learning from them, can you progress toward whatever goal you have set for yourself. By taking chances, and making mistakes, then taking responsibility for them you grow in wisdom and as a person.

Taking responsibility also includes how we respond to other people and to situations. This means others are not responsible for how we feel. Situations are not responsible for how we turn out. We are solely responsible for our actions and feelings.

One major factor that determines how our life turns out is not what happens to us, but how we respond to things life puts in our path. So, if there is something in your life that isn’t what you want, take a look at yourself and see whether there is something you’re doing that may be bringing on whatever it is you don’t want there.

This is a first step in taking responsibility for your life.

Remember you are totally responsible for the choices you make in your life. Your upbringing doesn’t make you choose one way or another. Your peers can’t make you do something. Your education or lack of it doesn’t make you choose something instead of something else.

Taking responsibility for your actions means you open yourself up to new experiences, new thoughts, new feelings. New options.

Taking responsibility means choosing what whether you’re going to train today, whether you’re going to push yourself to do just a little more, whether you’re going to listen to your trainer, teacher, or coach.

Taking responsibility means accepting failure and success equally humbly. And learning from both.

Taking responsibility earns you respect. From others and, most importantly, from yourself. It is a measure of your self-worth, of your sense of security, and of your strength of character.

This requires practice and mental discipline. A great way to develop responsibility is to get involved in martial arts training. Taking responsibility is important.
