When you focus your energies on something, you’re thinking on purpose rather than just allowing thoughts to course through your mind. This is the importance of focus.

Learning something and learning it well involves focusing on every aspect of whatever it is you’re learning. Concentrating and keeping your thoughts on the object of your learning is focus.

Your thoughts have energy. Keeping your thoughts sharp on one thing brings energy to your mastering that thing. One importance of focus is to use the energy of your thoughts to open your mind to every small factor of what you’re learning so each one will imprint itself on your mind to be available when it’s needed.

Focusing is making your mind open to learning.

Another importance of focus is related to the idea that your mind can’t tell the difference between something imagined very vividly and reality. Being able to focus allows you to imagine a result or an activity in great detail and thus gain some learning from that imagining. This allows you to mentally practice even when you don’t feel well or when you may be injured and not able to engage in actual practice.

What do you have to do in order to utilize the importance of focus? One thing is to make sure you know your goal. Specify what it is you’re working toward. Become able to visualize not just the end result, but also each step required to get there. Know not only what you want to achieve, but also why you want to achieve it.

Next, know there will be times you don’t succeed, times you fail in focusing on your goal. Make plans for what you can do at those times, for how you will re-focus and resume using the energy of your thoughts to pursue your goal.

Also, you need to learn to say no to the myriad of other things that can work to interfere with your harnessing the importance of focus. Many of those other things will be very attractive at the time they show up in your life. Focusing will help you keep your goal in mind and stay true to your desire to achieve that goal. It will help you concentrate on what you need to do in the face of interference.

Utilizing the importance of focus will allow you to stay with one task at a time and not get involved in multiple projects. Many people stress the value of multitasking. This is an illusion. In fact, being involved in multiple tasks at one time simply divides your focus in all of those ways and keeps you from excelling at any one of them.

When you want to excel at something, utilize the importance of focus. Stay with one task at a time. Concentrate your energies on one goal at a time. Certainly, you can have multiple goals. The trick is to work on only one at a time, and focus your energies on that goal during that time.
