Attitude is Important

In whatever you do in life, attitude is important. You’ve heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” Because attitude is important, you could change that to, “You are what you think.”

Socially, people are attracted to those who make a good impression on them. Those who give them a good feeling. Those who are easy to be around and help you feel good.

People with positive attitudes are those kind of people.

It’s easy to have a good, positive attitude when things are going well. But how about when things are hard, when nothing seems to go right, when you’d like to just go home and curl up and take a nap? That’s the perfect time to make yourself have a positive attitude.

And you will have to make yourself have that attitude. We’ll come back to that in a minute.

Attitude is important to your health, also. A study of almost 3,000 heart patients at Duke University showed those patients who answered “very good” when asked about their health were 70% less likely to die in three years than those who answered “good” to the same question. Their survival rate was three times better than those who answered “poor” to the question. Everything in this study that could affect a person’s survival and could be controlled was controlled. This shows attitude is important.

At Johns Hopkins University, a study of 5,000 people over 65 showed a poor attitude about a person’s health almost doubled the risk of death within five years. This study showed a poor attitude to be more deadly than congestive heart failure or smoking 50 packs of cigarettes a year.

Attitude is important.

Think about this: How often has a person’s attitude determined how you felt about them? The same thing is true of others about you.

Attitude is in everything about you. Your expression, your voice, how you walk, your gestures. Because attitude is important and infuses every part of your being, it will be one of the most important factors in whether or not you’ll be successful in what you attempt.

What can you do about attitude? There is no magic answer. Like was said before, it takes work.

First, evaluate your attitude. How do you feel about whatever you’re doing? Whatever it is, try to find something positive about it and about how well you do it. Find something you can be proud of in what you do. Maybe some days, that will only be that you showed up and tried hard. That’s okay. Think about why you’re doing what you do. How do you make a contribution?

Next, what do you expect? Whatever you expect is likely what you’ll get. Make yourself expect success and not failure. You may have to look for the success, but there will be some there somewhere.

Then, believe in yourself. Look at how far you’ve come in whatever you’re doing. Look at how much you’ve improved, what you’ve learned.

Look around for opportunities to be better, to contribute more. The more you contribute, the better you’ll feel about yourself.

Keep your focus on your positives. Don’t let others drag you into their negatives.
