Affirmations in the martial arts will help bring you to the peak of your abilities. What are affirmations? They are those positive things you say to yourself before, during, and after training or competing in martial arts.

Affirmations have been used for many years in every aspect of life to increase a person’s ability to do something he or she sets out to do. Athletes use them to pump themselves up for competition. Students use them to trigger good performance on tests, Business people use them to get ready for important presentations.

Affirmations in the martial arts increase your motivation to do the sometimes tiring, but always necessary, practicing to sharpen your skill. They increase your belief in yourself and your ability to get better and better in the martial arts.

Giving yourself affirmations in the martial arts means you’re telling yourself things that are positive about your abilities. Statements that are true. Statements you believe.

Sometimes, these statements have to do with the future, recognizing how you will improve with more and more practice. Sometimes, the statements have to do with the present, knowing how well you are doing and how much you desire to do better.

How does this work? When you give yourself affirmations in the martial arts, you’re tapping into the subconscious mind. Telling yourself over and over again these positive statements drives them deep into this part of your mind where they’ll be available for your use when you need them without having to think about them. Your subconscious mind accepts these statements as true and uses them to increase your confidence in your abilities.

This process is almost like a form of self-hypnosis.

Using affirmations in the martial arts will build your mental strength. This is one of the first steps in building your skill as a martial artist. It helps you develop the toughness of mind, the ability to control emotions, the concentration skills, and the psychological endurance you need to succeed in the martial arts.

Just like other skills you learn in the martial arts, giving yourself affirmations will generalize to other areas of your life, as well. It is a skill you can use to perform better in any situation in which you find yourself.
