It was 1983 when I first discovered Kung Fu, having met someone who had been training for about four years at the time. I was seventeen, in high school and not working so I figured my only option was to pick up a book and try to learn on my own.

I soon discovered that’s virtually impossible!

However, the book I found which was published only about a year earlier was called, “Shaolin Long Fist Kung Fu” by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. It was about as authentic as there was available back then. Like most, I knew very little about the many different styles of martial arts, but I must say that I fell in love with Chinese martial arts right then and there, known simply as “Kung Fu”.

In this book I discovered a very different perspective than I expected. I learned that training in the martial arts are simply for self defense, not fighting. In other words, there are more ways to resolve conflict and face challenges than simply lashing out and getting violent or to beat people down to get what you want.

I also learned about the power of patience and perseverance.

In this talk I tell the story of “Two Brothers”, a story that changed my whole perspective of not only the martial arts or “karate” (as most think of it) but how I approach every area of my life even to this day.

I hope you enjoy it.
